SculptureCenter Director and Chief Curator, Mary Ceruti will lead a conversation between exhibiting artist Katrín Sigurdardóttir and Danielle Kisluk-Grosheide, Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Taking Sigurdardóttir’s work, Foundation, as its starting point, the conversation will consider how architecture, art and design reflect the historical periods in which they are made, the relationship between labor and materiality, and notions of expression and authorship.

Katrín Sigurdardóttir’s Foundation was created for The Icelandic Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale, and then traveled to the Reykjavík Art Museum before coming to SculptureCenter where it is on view June 1 – July 28, 2014. Sigurdardóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1967. Over two decades, she has explored the way physical structures and boundaries define our perception of reality. Through unexpected shifts in scale, united with a personal use of architecture, cartography and landscape, her evocative installations oblige us to look at the world surrounding us in a new way.

Danielle Kisluk-Grosheide joined the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum's Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts in 1984. Responsible for the collections of French and English furniture and period interiors, she has written extensively on European decorative arts and was the co-author of European Furniture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Highlights of the Collection (2006) as well as of a handbook to The Wrightsman Galleries for French Decorative Arts (2010). Most recently she was the co-curator of an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center in New York, entitled Salvaging the Past: Georges Hoentschel and French Decorative Arts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2013). She was responsible for the installation of a new gallery devoted to Dutch Decorative Arts which opened to the public in May 2013. At present she is preparing an exhibition about Visitors to Versailles for 2017. She worked with Katrin Sigurdardottir on her 2010 exhibition, Boiseries, at the Metropolitan Museum.
