Studio Visit with David Altmejd

A studio visit with sculptor David Altmejd. The artist opened his Long Island City studio to members, answering questions, discussing his inspiration, process, and studio practice.

Altmejd is internationally known for his sculptural installations that include a macabre cast of anthropomorphic characters, often werewolves or bird-men, who populate sleek and shimmering architectural environments interspersed with faux plant life, crystals, birds, forest creatures, and signs of decay. Several symbolic systems and potential narratives overlap in these complex environments that reference biological systems, horror films, minimalism, and retail display among others.

Altmejd, born in 1972 in Montreal Canada, has exhibited his work internationally, representing Canada in the 2007 Venice Biennial with The Index, an ambitious installation filling the entire Canadian Pavilion with his uncanny creations. He has been included in numerous group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial. He first showed his work in New York at the SculptureCenter in 2001 as part of the Interval exhibition.
